On May 27, 1919, the NC-4 flying boat, commanded by Lt. Comdr. Albert C. Read, landed in the harbor at Lisbon, Portugal, completing the first crossing of the Atlantic Ocean by air. The NC-4 flight terminated at Plymouth, England, on May 31.
