Injured Crewman Carried To Safety -- This graphic picture shows an injured member of the gallant crew of the USS Yorktown (CV-5) being carried to the deck of a destroyer by means of a breeches buoy. The Yorktown was sunk in the Battle of Midway on 7 June 1942 after being bombed and torpedoed by Japanese planes on 4 June, and by a submarine on 6 June. Total American losses in the battle were 92 officers and 215 men against the estimate Japanese losses of 4,800 men. The Yorktown and her planes played a prominent part in repelling the Japanese invasion force which sought to take the strategic Pacific island of Midway.
