The Old cruiser Chicago, which had been commissioned in 1889 served at Pearl harbor from 1919 to 1935 as a submarine headquarters ship and barracks. Decommissioned in 1923 she was renamed Alton in 1928 so Chicago could be used for a new heavy Cruiser.
