Maj. Gen. Clifton B. Cates commanded the 4th Marine Division (23rd/24th/25th Infantry Regiments) on Iwo Jima. Pior to WW II he served in WW I (Navy Cross), and China. After WW II, General Cates became the 19th Commandant of the Marine Corps (1948-1951)
