On 11 May 1945, USS Bunker Hill (CV-17) was hit by two kamikazes, killing 389 and wounding 264. These two suicide hits acted as fuses to the gasoline-filled and bomb-laden aircraft on deck. There followed a heroic battle by her crew to save the ship.
