The Navy employed the Grumman TBF-1 Avenger in a land-based role at Midway. Six Avengers (so-named later in the war) of Hornet’s Torpedo Squadron 8 (VT-8), which was to transition from TBD-1 Devastators to TBF-1s, arrived at Midway on 1 June.
