USS Maddox (DD-622) escorted convoys in the Caribbean and the Atlantic. On 10 July 1943, Maddox was supporting landings at Gela, Sicily, when she was struck by one or two Luftwaffe aerial bombs. Maddox lost 210 of her crew.
