The two-star fuselage placard and wing-strut pennant signify that this Loening OL-8, BuNo A-7847, is the command aircraft of Rear Admiral Joseph M. Reeves, Commander, Aircraft Squadrons, Battle Fleet. One of 20 built, the aircraft, coded 1-J-3, flies past USS Lexington (CV-2) on 14 December 1928. Reeves is commonly known as the father of U.S. Navy carrier aviation for his seminal work with Langley (CV-1) and later Lexington and Saratoga (CV-3).
