Marines, despite their warrior ethos, are compassionate even in the most desperate of times. Motion picture cameraman Staff Sergeant (later Major) Norman T. Hatch of the 2nd Marine Division shares his water with a kitten he found under a burned-out Japanese tank during a respite in the fighting for Tarawa in November 1943. The film Hatch shot was edited into the short documentary film With Marines at Tarawa, which won the 1945 Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject.
