Alan B. Shepard, Rear Admiral, USN, Ret (deceased) was an experienced Navy test pilot when he was selected as one of the Mercury astronauts in April 1959. On May 5, 1961, in the Freedom 7 spacecraft, he was launched on a ballistic trajectory suborbital
