Designed as short-ranged carrier-based interceptor, the Douglas F4D-1 Skyray (later F-6A) was first delivered April 16, 1956, to All Weather Fighter Squadron Three (then VC-3, later VFAW-3), on full time duty with the North American Air Defense Command.
